PURPOSE: This agenda item is needed to acquire Commission approval of the supplemental appropriation from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund to purchase (2) 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe Police K-9 replacement vehicles. CONSIDERATIONS: The Police Department currently has two K-9 vehicles that are 2003 Chevrolet Impalas that have more than 60,000 mile each. These two vehicles continuously operate a full 12 hr shift in order to keep the K-9's safe, running the vehicle in this fashion decreases the life of the vehicle over time. Replacing the two 2003 Impalas at this time before maintenance cost goes up for the vehicles and to continue to provide a safe environment for the K-9's will insure the continued readiness of the unit. Replacing the Impalas with Police Package Chevrolet Tahoe's from the Florida Sheriffs State bid would be a more efficient vehicle to have as a K-9 vehicle. Agencies that have gone to the Tahoe have found it to be more suitable vehicle for K-9 Operations by providing more room for equipment and safer environment for the K-9. In addition, the Police Department would like Commission approval to donate the two used K-9 vehicles to Seminole Community College Criminal Justice Program as we have done so in the past with the Seminole County School Board for the Driving Education Program. These vehicles would not be suitable for the Drivers Education Program. FUNDING: The source of funds will come from the Special Law Enforcement Trust Fund (Local & Federal), $29,421.00 from the local fund with a balance of $35,277.00 and $29,421.00 from the federal with a balance of $39,849.00. A total cost of $58,842.00 for two fully equipped Police Package Chevrolet Tahoe's.
