COMMISSION AGENDA ITEM C CONSENT INFORMATIONAL X PUBLIC HEARING REGULAR September 27, 1999 Meeting MGR ~EPT ~ Authorization REQUEST: Public Works Department Advise the City Commission of the Tree Give Away Program for the 1999 Arbor Day Celebration in conjunction with the Tree City USA requirements. PURPOSE: The purpose of this Board item is to advise the City Commission of our intent to continue to hold a 1999 Tree Give Away in observance of the Arbor Day Celebration based on the success rate of previous Tree Give Aways. CONSIDERA nONS: The Public Works Department in conjunction with the Beautification of Winter Springs Board conducted Tree Give Away Programs in 1996 and 1997 to celebrate Arbor Day as part of the Tree City USA requirements. The continuation of this program as an annual event was to be based on the success of the program as measured by the survivability of the trees. Previous giveaways have resulted in an approximate success rate of 70% validating the continuation of the program. This year's program based on input from the BOWS Board and Environmental Inspector will include 500 3-gallon Southern Red Cedar, Red Maple, Live Oaks, Flatwood Plum, and Southern Magnolia. The cost of the 500 trees will average $7.85 each. It is intended that one tree be given to each household. The actual future value of these trees towards the ecosystem and the beautification of the city makes it worth continuing on an annual basis. FUNDING: The total cost of the event will be $3,925.00 and funds for the event are available from the Public Works Arbor Improvements line code (4410-54685).
