Partyka COMMISSION ACTION: CITY OF WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA 1126 EAST STATE ROAD 434 WINTER SPRINGS. FLORIDA 32708-2799 Telephone (407) 327-1800 OFFICE OF THE MAYOR May 19, 1999 TO: City Commission RE: Workshop on Commission Meeting Procedures I would like to have a workshop on meeting procedures. Consistently our meetings are long and we continually get bogged down. I believe we can improve our meetings if we take some time to educate ourselves. It is unfortunate that we didn't have an orientation on parliamentary procedures. If we did, our meetings would be more efficient. Interestingly newly elected officials at the state and federal level have orientations in this area as part of their transition plan for new officials. Unfortunately, we don't have this in our city. Perhaps we should for future new officials. In the meantime, I will suggest at the next Commission meeting that we conduct a workshop on this matter. I have asked Marilyn Crotty from the Tri-County League of Cities/UCF for her suggestion. She suggested that I bring Ms. Randi Sutpin, who is an expert on parliamentary procedures. Her book, "Basic Parliamentary Procedures for Government Bodies" is used throughout Central Florida. I have talked to her and she thought it was a good idea and would help us be better elected officials. Based on her schedule and our workshop schedule, Monday June 7 at 6:30 PM seems to work. The workshop should take l-II2 hours. Randi's goal is for us to save hours of time in our meetings. This would be good for us and, importantly, for our citizens that attend our meetings. Wouldn't it be nice to end meetings by 9 or 10 PM (the original intent of the earlier start time) and with more productivity? That's her goal and should be our goal. Hopefully, you concur.
