HomeMy WebLinkAbout1999 05 24 Informational Item B COMMISSION AGENDA ITEM B CONSENT INFORMATIONAL X PUBLIC HEARING REGULAR Meeting May 24, 1999 MGR REQUEST: The Parks and Recreation Department requests that the City Commission review infonnation on supervised basketball playtime this summer at Torcaso Park. PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to assure that the City Commission is infonned of all the pertinent details regarding this activity scheduled to begin on June 7, 1999. CONSIDERATIONS: . The Parks and Recreation Department in cooperation with the Police and Fire Departments has organized a employee group that has been meeting on alternatives for youth of the community. During discussions and with approval of the City Manager the employee group has decided to offer an organized and supervised basketball play time this summer at Torcaso Park. Recreational Leaders, Police Officers, Firefighters and other City employees will be at the Park from 6 pm till 9 pm Monday through Friday for an eight week period beginning June 7th and ending July 30th. Boys and Girls ages 7 to 15 will be encouraged to participate in this no cost program. . The employee group has also titled itself "The Community Youth Organization of Winter Springs" or for identification purposes as C. YO. (Community Youth Organization). It is the purpose of this group to offer more expanded supervised alternatives for the youth of Winter Springs. This first attempt will be a trial of what we hope will become a model for other communities as well as provide a safe alternative for youth of this community. The organized basketball playtime with adequate participation of youth of the community will allow public employees to become a positive role model to the youth. The youth upon entering the park will be registered for attendance purposes and will be broken into age groups for supervised practices and game play. Employees will be utilized as coaches, scorers, referees, and to provide assistance for the activity. We will begin the program by providing three Recreational Leaders as well as Police Resource Officers and Firefighters. However, we are encouraging other City employees, Community Leaders and interested Citizens alike to assist us in this endeavor. . Supplies for this activity will include reversible jerseys, whistles, clock, flip type scoreboard, and other miscellaneous supplies. The Parks and Recreation Department will require approximately $2,500 to $3,000 from the operating budget for this activity. Soliciting sponsorships from the community could further reduce future costs. Other programs have been discussed such as dances, movies, and holiday activities. FUNDING: No additional funding authority is needed. The Parks and Recreation Department will expend approximately $2,500 to $3,000 from the operating budget for this activity. RECOMMENDATION: No recommendations at this time this item is for informational purposes only. IMPLEMENTATION SCHEDULE: Supervised basketball playtime is scheduled to begin on June 7, 1999.
