HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998 06 22 Informational Item A , d I ~COMMISSION AGENDA ITEM A CONSENT INFORMATIONAL X PUBLIC HEARING REGULAR Meeting MGR ~ !DEPT ~~ I Authorization 22 June 1998 REQUEST: The Fire Department requests that the City Commission review information on the participation at the Geneva brush fire. PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to inform the City Commission of the personnel and equipment utilized at the Geneva brush fire. CONSIDERATIONS: The brush fire was first reported at 1550 Indian Cypress Trail in Geneva at 12:12 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 1998. Seminole County Fire Units responded and asked for assistance immediately from surrounding Departments. Winter Springs Battalion Chief Guglielmello was dispatched at 1 :54 p.m. and was in charge of a task force team until he was released at 2:05 am Sunday morning. Seminole County also requested Winter Springs Engine 124, which carries 1300 gallons of water to respond. Engine 124 was staffed with Lieutenant Schneider and Firefighter Keene. They worked from 1 :36 p.m. Saturday afternoon till 12:36 am Sunday morning completing fire suppression activities. Battalion Chief Forrest was called at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday to cover the position of Battalion Chief for Winter Springs and the South end of the County. B/C Forrest remained in Winter Springs until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday when he was requested to report to the Command Post in Geneva. B/C Forrest worked in the Command Post until 2:00 am Sunday morning and then was re-assigned as Division Commander of the East Division commanding as many as 6 task forces. B/C Forrest remained on the scene until relieved at 8:30 am on Sunday. During the fire, Wi:nter Springs Fire Department personnel were faced with extreme fire conditions and were in heavy smoke the entire time they were on the scene. None of our personnel have ever experienced a fire of this magnitude in their entire career. Car 8, the 4 X 4 Chevrolet Suburban that our Battalion Chiefs drive had to pull out many stuck vehicles with its winch, saving them from the fire along with assisting people out of the area. Needless to say our engine and crew saved many homes from the fire even though ~ . I June 22, 1998 Informational Agenda Item "A" Page 2 many homes and thousands of acres of trees were destroyed. It is unknown if any Winter Springs citizens specifically assisted the County with other activities concerning this fire. However, many people have donated clothing, food, supplies, labor, and money to the victims of this disaster and to assist the firefighters. RESULTS: Personnel Utilized: Battalion Chief Forrest Battalion Chief Guglielmello Lieutenant Schneider Fi.refighter Keene Equipment Used: Engine 124 Car 4 Car 8 FUNDING: No additional funding was required for this activity.
