REQUEST: Police Department providing information to the City Commission relative to the
intiation of the BFI Inc. Neighborhood Watch Program with the Police and Fire Departments in
Winter Springs.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to inform the City Commission about BFI Inc. starting
a Neighborhood watch program between their drivers, and the Police and Fire
Departments. BFI Inc. is presently using this program in various areas throughout
the Country.
CONSIDERATIONS:
The Police and Fire Departments have been contacted by Mr. AI Crump from BFI
Inc. trash removal regarding a Neighborhood Watch Program that they have
initiated in other parts of the Country. The program promotes cooperation and
interaction between BFI and local governments. Their drivers are trained to be
observant while they are working in the community and to call Police and Fire
departments when they become aware of situations that require their attention.
Employees of BFI are also trained not to intervene in criminal activity but instead
to contact the local Police Department. This program is similar to the current
Neighborhood Watch Programs in our neighborhoods. However, this plan adds
even more eyes and ears looking out for the safety of our citizens.
