IDEPT Authorization REQUEST: Police Department requesting the Commission to give approval for the acquisition of two surplus police vehicles from the Seminole County Sheriffs Department. PURPOSE: The purpose of this item is to gain Commision Approval to acquire two surplus vehicles to provide for the use of the two School Resource Officers that will be assigned to Indian Trails Middle School and the Winter Springs High School beginning in August of this year. CONSIDERA TIONS: The Seminole County Sheriffs Department has two surplus patrol vehicles, which they will make available to the City at no cost. The vehicles will be utilized by the School Resource Officers for transportation to and from the school facilities, for traffic direction points in the mornings and afternoons, and for special events at the respective schools. These vehicles will be added to the fleet so that our current resources are not adversely affected, and that our patrol vehicles are available during their designated patrol shifts. One vehicle is a 1991 Chevrolet Caprice and the other vehicle is 1992 Chevrolet Caprice. Both were take home vehicles in the county and well maintained with approximately 80,000 miles on the odometers, Due to the fact our residents pay county taxes the vehicles will be transferred to the Winter Springs Police Department at no cost. Because the vehicles will be assigned to positions that do not require constant use and wear and tear, the maintenance costs are anticipated to be very low. Therefore this should be a very cost effective way to get the School Resource Officer Program started. The current police fleet consists of twenty vehicles. The implemetation of the School Resource Officers Program requires the assigning of two vehicles to these positions. The two Chevrolet Caprices will allow us to expand our fleet to twenty-two vehicles without impacting vehicles currently used in other positions. The total cost of marking both vehicles is $400.00 which can be covered by existing funds. FUNDING: No additional appropriations required. RECOMMENDA nON: Authorize the acqusition of both vehicles from the Seminole County Sheriffs Department. IMPLEMENTA nON SCHEDULE: Immediately upon approval of Commission.
