R\J Y\ IDEPTUAv Authoriz~tion REQUEST: The Parks and Recreation Department requests the Commission to acknowledge the volunteer citizens and staff that participated in the Lake Tuscawilla Clean Up Day event held Saturday, November 2,1996 and extend the City's gratitude for services rendered. PURPOSE: The purpose of this request is to update the Commission on the event and recognize the volunteers and staff participants in the event. GENERAL INFORMATION: · On October 14, 1996 the Commission was informed of the Lake TuscawiIla Clean Up Day event. See Attachment #1. The event was derived from the Lake TuscawilIa Sub Committee which was formerly a part of the Trotwood Park Citizen Master Plan Committee. · Members of the Lake TuscawilIa Clean Up Sub Committee were: * Annette Pursley *Gordon Naruta *Rudy Werlink *Chris Murphy, Storm water Utility Manager · The event was promoted mainly by word of mouth and the use of flyers which described the event. See Attachment #2. ~ .. Page 2 Commission Agenda Item 29 November 25, 1996 The event was promoted and the flyers distributed in the following manner: 1. Through City Commission Agenda Item of October 14, 1996, Informational, "A". 2. Over 250 flyers were hand carried to individual homes throughout the Tuscawilla community by Sarah and Carolyn Werlink. They also made announcements at their schools and distributed flyers. 3. Mr. Gordon Naruta distributed the flyers to area businesses so they could post them in their windows. 4. The Orlando Sentinel printed an article regarding the event. 5. The Winter Springs Voice printed an event announcement on two occaSIOns. 6. "TuscawiIla Today" contained an announcement of the event. . Prior to the event the Parks and Recreation Department received assistance from Public Works on Friday, November 1,1996 when Leonard Hadden, Heavy Equipment Operator and Bruce Schneider, Maintenance Worker worked on site and mowed the lake slopes and southeastern area of the park. These areas are those which remain in a natural state and are usually only mowed periodically throughout the year. THE EVENT: . The event was held November 2, 1996 as planned and we had a gorgeous Florida day weatherwise. It was mostly overcast and the temperatme hovered around 70 degrees. . Fifteen residents participated in the event and to the best of our recollection were as follows: :. Page 3 Commission Agenda Item 29 November 25, 1996 Mayor John F. Bush Mr. and Mrs. Pursley & Family Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Naruta Rudy Werlink Chris Werlink Sarah Werlink Carolyn Werlink Terry Bushey & Daughter · Commissioner's Gennell and Langellotti and Commissioner Elect Michael Blake dropped by and thanked everyone for taking of their valuable time to assist with the project. · City staff assisting ,and working the event on November 2, 1996 were: Pete Wiggins, Public Works-Light Equipment Operator Gordon Peyton, Public Works, Maintenance Worker Linda Godkin, Parks and Recreation Administrative Secretary R .T. Hillery, Parks and Recreation Sports Coordinator Chris Wargo, Parks and Recreation Superintendent Jamie Herring, Parks and Recreation Crew Chief Mike Goodall, Parks and Recreation Maintenance Worker Steven Franks, Parks and Recreation Maintenance Worker Without the assistance of Pete Wiggins and Gordon Peyton of Public Works and the use of he Bobcat and dumptruck the event would not have been as successful. These two men and the equipment really provided a lot of fire power for the event. BOTTOM LINE RESULTS: · 6 TONS OF DEBRIS WAS PHYSICALLY REMOVED FROM THE LAKE, LAKE BANKS AND THE CANAL BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 9:00AM AND 12:00 NOON. 98% of the debris was hauled to the dump on event day. · At the 70% completion point of the canal cleaning the direction of the water flow in the canal actually changed from "inflow" to "outflow". ,\, " Page 4 Commission Agenda Item 29 November 25, 1996 FUNDING: N/A RECOMMENDATION: . The Commission is requested to acknowledge all participants who assisted with the event and extend the City's and Trotwood Park Wildlife's gratitude for services rendered in making the lake a more enjoyable amenity for the citizenry and improving the environmental guality of the lake.
