HomeMy WebLinkAbout1996 11 25 Regular Item B \ COMMISSION AGENDA ITEM B REGULAR X CONSENT INFORMATIONAL November 25. 1996 Meeting MGR;?tt01 /DEPT /~y-- Authorization REQUEST: Utility Department Advising the Commission of the Refceipt of an Award for Excellence from the Department of Environmental Protection. PURPOSE: The purpose of this Board item is to advise the Commission of the Receipt ofan Award for Excellence in Operation and Maintenance for a Large Water Treatment Plant from the Department of Environmental Protection Central District and to recognize Doug Taylor, Steve Baggs, Scott Coffman, and Richard Long for their contributions in the City's receipt of the award. CONSIDERA TIONS: The Utility Department was notified on October 7, 1996 the Water Treatment Plant #1 (Tuskawilla) had been selected to receive an award for Excellence in Operation and Maintenance for a large Water Treatment Plant from the Department of Environmental Protection Central District office. Each year, the four DEP districts in the State each select a large and small water treatment plant for this award. Three employees went to Tallahassee on November 6th to receive the award that is the fIrst for the Utility Department. Water Treatment Plant #1 was purchased by the City in April, 1990 as part of the Seminole Utility system. The need for improvements at this facility was crystallized in August of 1992 when an electrical fife damaged the motor control centers, breakers and disconnects. The City Commission authorized nwnerous improvements to this facility totaling approximately $600,000 consummating with the recent completion of a new generator building and relocated generator that will completely operate this facility under " , November 25, 1996 Regular Agenda Item B Page .1 emergency power. Other improvements included new high service pumps and controls, new chlorine handling facility, tank aerator replacement and painting, operations building roof replacement, and lab furniture replacement. In addition to the capital improvements, a great deal of time was spent cleaning, painting and general housekeeping to provide the finishing touches necessary to make this a top notch facility. The persons responsible for the operation and maintenance of the water treatment plants are: Doug Taylor, Utility Superintendent Steve Baggs, Lead Water Plant Operator Scott Coffman, Water Plant Operator Richard Long, Maintenance Mechanic When the award plaque is received, it will displayed in the City Hall lobby cases along the submittal package and photos. We will continue to seek this same award in the future for our other two water treatment plants.. ATTACHMENTS: 1.
