HomeMy WebLinkAbout1996 03 25 Informational Item H -) /j' COMMISSION AGENDA ADD ON ITEM H REGULAR CONSENT INFORMATIONAL X March 25, 1996 Meeting TITLE: City Manager (Information Systems Coordinator) advising the Board of the results of the Strategic Planning Workshop on Information Systems Management for the City. PURPOSE: The purpose of this Board item is to inform the Commission of the results of the recent Strategic Planning Workshop on Information System Management. CONSIDERA TIONS: February 13, 1996, the staff had a workshop on Information Systems Management with Mr. Kevin Krysda, Information Systems Manager for Martin County, Florida. The workshop consisted of a day long evaluation of our current information system capacity and culminated with a discussion of important strategies and recommendations with the staff From this meeting we were able to develop a clear direction for the City consisting of the following milestones. a) No more DOS Programs to be purchased. b) Decision on User Interface (graphical) c) Decision on standard software for word processing, spreadsheets, and database. ::t ;' March 25, 1996 AGENDA ITEM NUMBER ----.H...- (ADD ON) Page 2 d) Planned infrastructure - cabling inside and out, and infrastructure of cabling closets. e) Decision on immediate needs to bring the City up to standard along with cost information. Since the meeting we have accomplished the following: a) The City will no longer purchase programs written for DOS; only Windows programs. b) The City will be using a Windows Software package as User Interface. c) The City will be using MicroSoft Office Professional Package. d) The cabling planned consists of: twisted pair, category 5 wiring for both data and phone wiring on inside of building; fiber optic from building to building, and wiring "closet" per building where hubs and patch panels will be kept. e) A comprehensive list is in the works for hardware and software, and will be completed for the next staff meeting. This workshop was completed without expense to the City. RECOMMENDA TIONS: This information item is presented for your review and any comments you deem appropriate. COMMISSION ACTION:
